Successful information day on quitting smoking at Mayo General

Mayo General Hospital held a very successful information day on quitting smoking in the hospital recenty. The event was organised by Claudia Oliveira, respiratory scientist and Michelle Redmond, a/respiratory clinical nurse specialist. The aim of the day was to inform members of the public, patients, and staff of the importance of quitting smoking. In addition, visitors to the information day were offered a carbon monoxide (CO) test. CO is a poisonous gas that has no colour or smell. It is one of the products found in tobacco smoke and this breath test can tell how much CO a smoker has in his/her body.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday February 28 from 3pm to 5pm in the TF Royal Hotel Castlebar. From 3pm to 3.10pm there will be an opening session; from 3.10pm to 3.30pm there will be pulmonary rehab, exercises; from 3.30pm to 3.40pm there will be tea/coffee; and from 4pm to 4.30pm there will be a guest speaker Nolene Cashin who will discuss health and wellbeing. Go along for a cup of tea and a chat.

Following the success of its first Breathe Freely programme for COPD and lung fibrosis sufferers, the Galway Chest Clinic has announced that it will run another programme in January 2013. The programme is designed to improve the quality of life for people with chronic lung diseases, many of whom suffer from considerable shortness of breath when carrying out simple daily tasks despite maximum medical therapy. The British and Irish Thoracic Societies have stated that all patients with lung diseases whose lifestyle is adversely affected by chronic breathlessness would benefit from such a course.

Free lung capacity testing in Mayo General Hospital

Olympic champion Dr Ronnie Delany and 11 leading Irish lung health charities and patient advocacy groups have joined forces to urge the public to take a simple, fast, and accurate test to measure their lung health. Mayo General Hospital is one of a number of centres around the country that will offer free lung testing (spirometry) and lung health advice on Wednesday June 27 from 10am to 2pm.
